iwight.com has been named runner-up in the final of the
Hantsweb Awards!

iwight.com was in the finals for the Hantsweb Awards 2009You may recall having recently read that iwight.com had been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Hantsweb Awards. We promised to let you know how we got on and following the awards ceremony on Tuesday 23rd February, we can now reveal that we received the prize for runner-up in the category of Best Public Service Website for 2009. It's the third year in a row our website has made it to the final three, having won the title in both 2008 and 2007.

The Hantsweb Awards are run by Hampshire County Council and celebrate website excellence and the best internet services across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. They play a huge role in improving the standard of online services, encouraging good practice and raising awareness of the opportunities that Internet services can offer communities.

A staggering 1400 websites from across the South were nomiated for awards by members of the public back in October, 83 of which were for the category of Best Public Service Website. This number was then whittled down to just three finalists with the top prize being scooped this year by community-based website The Worthys, and Hart District Council joining iwight.com as a runner-up.

Celebrating excellence in website design, accessibility and service

Members of the Isle of Wight Council's Web Team collecting their Hantsweb Certificate on 23 February 2010The philosophy behind the Hantsweb Awards is that by encouraging and rewarding the best websites and internet services available and by raising their profile and the profile of their services, it is hoped that more people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will benefit from going online.

This year's awards ceremony was held at the Planetarium at Intech in Winchester and showcased a fantastic array of websites across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, in addition to outlining the ability of the web to be a powerful communication tool.

Overall it was a triumphant day for Island-based websites, with The Real Island Food Company winning first prize for Best Business Innovation Website and The Ellen MacArthur Trust scooping an incredible two awards - one in the Best Charity or Voluntary Organisation category and for Best Life Changing website. Matt & Cat's IOW Eating Out Guide won the runner-up prize for Best Special Interest Website, with the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust taking the top prize in the same category.

The winner of the public vote, launched this year for the first time, was the University of Portsmouth Students' Union website.

Each of the websites selected as finalists were assessed by a team of judges with expertise and experience in their chosen field. Overall they were looking for good practice, accessibility, ease of use, and relevance, with the needs and experience of end users being at the forefront of every design.
